What is an open vented central heating system?
Open-vented central heating is where you have a ‘header tank’ in the loft which fills the boiler and radiator system initially and keeps it topped up with water on a long-term basis to replace losses form evaporation and/or minor leaks.
Why is the open vent important?
Open vent heating systems are ideal for large homes with multiple bathrooms because they can provide a lot of heat at once through the hot water cylinder in the system, allowing you to control multiple bathrooms at the same time. They also allow you to control the central heating in multiple rooms of the house.

What is the difference between an open vent boiler and a system boiler?
System Boiler System boilers are a little bit different to an open vent/conventional boiler. They don’t require a cold water storage tank as they get their water supply directly from the mains to heat the system which is then stored in the hot water cylinder.

What gives an open vented system its pressure?
Sealed systems have an expansion vessel that absorbs the pressure as the water in the system expands due to the heat in the system. Whereas open vented systems have an expansion pipe that lets out the pressure. Open vented systems are more prone to rust in the system.
What is the difference between an open and closed heating system?
In an open vented system an open tank at the highest point of the installation is used to store the expanded fluid (figure 1.1). In a closed system (pressurised/sealed) an expansion vessel is used to store the expanded fluid (figure 1.2).
What is the difference between vented and unvented heating systems?
The main difference between a vented and unvented water storage cylinder is that an unvented hot water cylinder takes its water supply directly from the mains. You can get hot water out of an unvented cyinder at a much better pressure than a traditional vented cylinder as it is pressurised.
How do you bleed open vents?
Step by step
- Turn off your boiler so it won’t fire up or run any pumps.
- Go to the radiator which requires attention and locate the bleed vent.
- Insert your radiator key and turn it anti clockwise to gently open the bleed vent.
- When water seeps out of the bleed vent gently close it until the water stops.
What is an open vented cylinder?
Open vented cylinders are low pressure hot water storage cylinders,i.e, water is supplied to these cylinders from a cold water storage cistern/tank (usually located in the loft/roof space) and not directly from the water mains like the mains pressured unvented cylinders.
What does open vented mean?
What is an open vented system? A heating system which is open to the atmosphere and has a feed and expansion tank.
What is a open vent boiler?
Open vent boilers are known to be a peculiarly British invention. An open vent (often known as heating only) provide central heating and hot water through a boiler, a storage cylinder stored in the airing cupboard and water tanks in your loft.
What is open vent boiler?
How do I know if my cylinder is vented or unvented?
Is an open vented or vented heating system better for You?
(NB not to be confused with vented and unvented hot water tanks, which are explained in our Guide to Hot Water Cylinders .) Many homes in the UK still have an open vented heating system and in some cases they are the better option for your home.
What is open-vented central heating?
Open-vented central heating is where you have a ‘header tank’ in the loft which fills the boiler and radiator system initially and keeps it topped up with water on a long-term basis to replace losses form evaporation and/or minor leaks.
Are open vented boilers still a thing in the UK?
Many homes in the UK still have an open vented heating system and in some cases they are the better option for your home. If you wish to retain your open vented system you will have to stick with a heat only boiler.
What is an open-vented water tank?
A float valve in the tank (more correctly called a ‘feed and expansion tank’, F&E tank) and connected to mains water keeps the water level in the tank and the heating system correct. The primary advantage of an open-vented system is that no user intervention is required to keep the system topped up with water.
